There are many good reasons for a veterinarian to put a practice up for sale: she has decided to retire to tropical Hawaii and sell her practice in snowy Minnesota; he has accepted a full-time faculty position at a vet school; etc.
But there can also be many not so good reasons they are trying to sell:
- Practice is stagnant or losing clients because of region’s decreasing population &/or economic depression
- New low-cost or better marketed competition in the neighborhood is attracting any new client prospects
- Incoming revenue is not sufficient to cover operating costs and/or needed infrastructure upgrades - etc.
Getting at the real answer is crucial. If they were failing at the business of veterinary medicine, you need to understand why - and
if you applied new or better approaches, can you turn it around.
